Health insurance

Health/Medical Insurance

Health insurance is obligatory for all foreign students.

EU/EFTA Students

Students from the EU and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) are entitled to medical care in Poland with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

The EHIC entitles holders to the same access to public healthcare services (doctor visits, pharmacies, hospitals, health care centres) as citizens of the host country. If the country’s healthcare system requires partial payment, students may either be reimbursed on the spot or upon returning home.

For more information, visit the National Health Fund (NFZ) website for EU/EFTA students regarding healthcare access during temporary stays in Poland.

Non-EU Students

Non-European students must purchase relevant health insurance in their home country before arriving in Poland.
The insurance should cover the entire duration of the stay – some policies may limit the number of days abroad, so students should check this carefully.

When using healthcare services, students must present their insurance policy. Depending on the policy, services may be provided free of charge or students may need to pay first and seek reimbursement from their insurance provider.

If a student does not have valid insurance, they must cover the full cost of medical services themselves.

Optional Insurance in Poland (NFZ)

It is possible to purchase insurance in Poland through the National Health Fund (NFZ) for approximately 49 PLN per month.

To join the NFZ, students must sign a contract at the nearest NFZ office:
ul. Jana Pawła II 7, 59-220 Legnica

Required documents:

  • Confirmation of student status issued by the International Relations Office

  • Student ID card

  • Passport or national ID

  • Confirmation of address (issued by the dormitory)

  • PESEL number (Polish personal ID number) – required if the stay exceeds 3 months

PESEL numbers are issued by the Social Affairs Department at the City Hall in Legnica.
